Biodiversity Surveys

Robust, field-based biodiversity data, collected by experienced surveyors and reported to the standard agencies expect.

Reliable biodiversity data is the foundation of responsible development in Singapore. Whether you are preparing a planning submission, responding to agency conditions, or establishing an ecological baseline before works begin, decisions are only as good as the surveys behind them.

ESC conducts baseline and targeted biodiversity surveys across taxonomic groups: flora and vegetation, birds (avifauna), reptiles and amphibians (herpetofauna), and mammals, supplemented by camera trapping for cryptic and nocturnal species. Survey design follows recognised methods, with effort and timing matched to the taxa and habitats on site, including dawn, dusk and nocturnal survey windows where appropriate.

Our deliverables are built for submission: species inventories with conservation status, abundance and distribution data, habitat maps and sensitivity mapping, and clearly written survey reports that agencies and consultants can rely on. Because our team also delivers EMMPs and ecological impact studies, our surveys are designed from the outset to feed directly into those downstream assessments.

What We Do

Scope of service

Flora & vegetation surveys

Species inventories, girth and condition data for significant trees, and vegetation community mapping.

Avifauna surveys

Point counts and transect surveys capturing resident and migratory bird species, including dawn survey windows.

Herpetofauna & mammal surveys

Targeted diurnal and nocturnal surveys for reptiles, amphibians and mammals, using recognised detection methods.

Camera trapping

Systematic camera trap deployment and analysis for cryptic, wide-ranging and nocturnal species.

Habitat assessment & sensitivity mapping

Habitat classification and condition assessment, mapped to highlight ecologically sensitive areas that planning should respond to.

Survey reporting

Clear, defensible reports with methods, effort, results and interpretation, suitable for submission to agencies.

Who This Is For

Built for the people responsible

  • Developers and landowners
  • Architects and master planners
  • Environmental consultants
  • Main contractors
  • Government agencies

Methodology & quality

  • Survey methods follow recognised local and international guidance, matched to site habitats and target taxa.
  • Survey effort and seasonal timing are designed to give agencies confidence in the completeness of the data.
  • Field teams are experienced in Singapore's fauna and flora, including species of conservation concern.
  • Data is delivered in usable formats (inventories, GIS-ready mapping) that plug directly into impact assessments and EMMPs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When in the project timeline should a biodiversity survey happen?

As early as possible, ideally at feasibility or concept design stage. Early baseline data lets ecological constraints shape the design, which is far cheaper than redesigning later in response to agency comments.

How long does a biodiversity survey take?

It depends on site size, habitats and target taxa. A focused survey of a small site may take a few weeks including reporting; multi-taxa baselines with camera trapping typically run longer to achieve adequate survey effort.

Will your report be accepted by the authorities?

Our reports document methods, effort and results to the standard agencies expect, and our team is experienced in supporting submissions to Singapore's planning and environment agencies.

Can survey results feed into an EMMP or impact study?

Yes. That is one of the main reasons to keep surveys, impact assessment and EMMP under one roof. Our survey design anticipates the downstream assessment so nothing needs to be re-collected.
